On September 27 2013, TEDx Transmedia will return to Rome, Italy, with the theme ‘Dangerously Ethical.’ To find out more, visit tedxtransmedia.com

TEDx Transmedia was created in 2010 by Nicoletta Iacobacci and is supported by the European Broadcasting Union

In 2009, in the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED created TEDx, a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

Our event is call TEDx Transmedia, where x=independently organised TED event. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organised.

Thirty-nine-year-old Salvatore Iaconesi has been diagnosed with brain cancer but is seeking a cure in an unconventional and radical way, by uploading his medical data as an open source project inviting responses from around the world. Uncomfortable with being ‘replaced’ by his dehumanising clinical records, he cracked their codes and on September 10 (2012) converted them into open formats to share online.

Italian robotic engineer and open source artist Salvatore, who was a surprise speaker at TEDx Transmedia 2012 in Rome on September 28, has invited the world to respond to his CT scans, MRIs, lab notes and glioma diagnosis in whatever way they want, in a bid to crowd-source a cure that is not just bodily but also heals his spirit and mind. He’s attracted hundreds of thousands of responses since it was launched in mid-September. Doctors have offered medical advice, artists have made films, and all have contributed to Salvatore’s strategy for overcoming cancer. Watch the video to hear his inspiring story.
